Camp Winding Gap is a family owned and operated summer camp for boys and girls ages 6 through 17. The camp property is adjacent to two National Forests and is owned by Shep and Marge Shepherd and is directed by their daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Dennis Hertzberg. We accept 50 campers per session and a limited number of Working Campers at reduced tuition for campers ages 16 and 17.
There are unlimited wilderness resources including waterfalls and miles of hiking and riding trails just outside the door! Our campers learn to canoe on the small camp lake and progress to the larger lakes and rivers nearby. Hikers and horseback riders enjoy many trails that lead to waterfalls and rivers. The Blue Ridge Parkway is just 20 minutes away and the Biltmore House is located in nearby Asheville.
Camp Winding Gap focuses on camper choice. The camp program offers a wide variety of activities every day; campers sign up a minimum of twice a week for three days at a time. The Animal Care Program offers the opportunity to feed and pet all of the camp animals. In addition to a wide variety of Daily Activities available for campers to choose from are many out-of-camp trips by foot, canoe, and horse. There is a nightly Evening Program, and Special Programs and Events take place every week.
Our enrollment is limited to 50 campers per session. The staff:camper ratio is 1:3. This high level of supervision means that your child will receive individualized attention throughout their stay. No one is 'lost in the crowd' at Camp Winding Gap!
